Melissa Martin's Uptown restaurant is a singular thing — a set Cajun menu served family-style in an intimate room, drawing entirely from the bayou cooking of Martin's Terrebonne Parish upbringing. Shrimp and okra, smothered chicken, blue crab, the dishes of coastal Louisiana's vanishing fishing communities. A James Beard-nominated cookbook came out of it. More cultural preservation than restaurant. For the most personal, place-specific Cajun cooking in the city.
