From the Editor

Chef Moshe Grundman cooked at Oceana NYC during its Michelin-recognized seafood-program era before opening Nerai on East 54th Street in 2013 as a refined contemporary counterpoint to the Midtown East Greek seafood field. The kitchen flies in lavraki, tsipoura, lithrini, and Dover sole near-daily, plating them with restraint alongside mezze and a Greek-leaning cellar recognized with Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence under sommelier Michael Coll. The whitewashed nautical room and the smaller-scale intimacy distinguish Nerai from Avra 48th Street — the institutional power-lunch room down the corridor — by chef-driven menu and contemporary fine-dining register rather than scene-y taverna format. No Michelin, no major NYT critic's review at Nerai. Grundman's Oceana pedigree is biographical backdrop, not transferred credentials, and the credentials here are sustained 13-year operation plus the Wine Spectator award. For the contemporary fine-dining register of Midtown Greek seafood, distinct from Avra's institutional whole-fish-by-the-pound power-lunch.
